While we continue to offer our Family Medicine elective, medical students will not be directly involved in the care of COVID-positive nor COVID-suspect patients. Students will, however, participate in teaching rounds and learn about the care and management of these patients.
The Ventura Family Medicine Residency Program at Ventura County Medical Center offers an elective in Family Medicine to fourth-year medical students who are 1) interested in full spectrum Family Medicine, 2) currently enrolled in a LCME-accredited school in the US or Canada, and 3) considering applying to our residency program (UCLA students excepted). Externships are available from June through January in a variety of departments (see below). Every rotation offers a combination of inpatient and outpatient experiences and, except for the Inpatient Medicine service, does not entail working weekends. Regardless of rotation, all externs attend Core Conference (protected didactic time) and also see patients in our continuity clinic, the Academic Family Medicine Center, with our residents and faculty. Structured like a sub-I, externs are an integral member of their team and are expected to take primary responsibility for their patients.
Applications may be submitted on or after February 15 for the 2020 - 2021 academic year. Externships can be of 2, 3 or 4 weeks duration. Those who are able to complete a full 4-weeks with us will rotate on two different services for two weeks each. Four week rotations are encouraged as this allows for the broadest exposure to our residents, faculty and residency program. Due to high demand for our limited number of positions, we are not able to offer a full 4 weeks in a single department.
We limit the number of students on each service to optimize learning, so we ask that you rank your rotation preferences from the different specialties offered. We will accommodate your preferences as much as possible. No matter the service, you will work alongside our family medicine residents and will often have family medicine attendings. Rotation options include:
- Emergency Department
- Inpatient Medicine
- Intensive Care Unit
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
* Please note: we do not accept medical students on Inpatient Medicine, OB-GYN or in the ICU for the first three weeks in July. Otherwise, rotations are available from June through January. As demand for our clerkships has risen, we give priority to those applicants with an interest in full-spectrum Family Medicine. Every application is reviewed in its entirety, so please excuse us if you do not hear back immediately. We have a limited number of externships, and occasionally need to hold applications for a time in order to compare them against a group of peers.
A general timeline is as follows:
|For an Externship Requested in||Expect Response By|
|June - July||March 15th|
|August - September||May 15th|
|October - November||July 15th|
|December - January||September 15th|
