EXTERNSHIPS
Fourth-Year Rotations
Considering a career in full-spectrum Family Medicine? The Ventura Family Medicine Residency Program at Ventura County Medical Center offers an elective in Family Medicine to fourth-year medical students. Come for a rotation to learn Family Medicine alongside our outstanding residents and faculty.
EXTERNSHIP DETAILS
We offer an elective in Family Medicine to fourth-year medical students who are 1) interested in full spectrum Family Medicine, 2) currently enrolled in LCME- or COCA-accredited schools in the US or Canada, and 3) considering applying to our residency program. Visiting students must be fully Covid-vaccinated and boosted.
Our residency program is committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the field of Family Medicine. We welcome underrepresented fourth-year medical students with financial need to apply for the VCMC DEI Scholarship. This scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to visiting medical students with financial need and to recruit students from underrepresented groups, particularly those who have faced adversity due to their social identities. Recipients will be granted a $500 stipend to support their rotation here.
For the 2024-2025 academic year, externships are available from June through January in a variety of departments (see below). Every rotation offers a combination of inpatient and outpatient experiences and, except for the Inpatient Medicine service, does not entail working weekends. Externs work alongside our family medicine residents in every department and will have both family medicine and specialty attendings throughout the hospital and ambulatory clinics. Students also attend Core Conference (protected didactic time) and see patients with our residents and faculty in our continuity clinic, the Academic Family Medicine Center. Structured like a sub-I, externs are integral members of their teams and are expected to take primary responsibility for their patients.
Applications will be reviewed beginning February 15, 2024, for the 2024 - 2025 academic year. Externships can be of 2-, 3- or 4-weeks duration. Four-week rotations are encouraged as this allows for the broadest exposure to our residents, faculty, and residency program. Those who can complete a full 4 weeks with us will rotate on two different services for two weeks each. Due to high demand for our limited number of positions, we are not able to offer a full 4 weeks in a single department.
We limit the number of students on each service to optimize learning, so we ask that you rank the rotations from the different specialties offered. We try to accommodate your preferences as much as possible. Rotation options include:
-
Addiction Medicine
-
Emergency Medicine
-
Inpatient Medicine
-
Intensive Care Unit
-
Obstetrics/Gynecology
-
Pediatrics
-
Surgery/Trauma
As demand for our clerkships has risen, we give priority to those applicants interested in broad-spectrum Family Medicine and caring for underserved populations. Every application is reviewed in its entirety, so please excuse us if you do not hear back immediately. We have a limited number of externships, and occasionally need to hold applications for a time to compare them against a group of peers.
