Ventura Family Medicine Residency Program at Ventura County Medical Center offers an elective in Family Medicine to interested fourth-year medical students attending LCME-accredited schools in the US and Canada. Externships can be of 2, 3 or 4 weeks duration. Those who are able to complete a full 4-weeks with us will rotate on two different services for two weeks each. This allows for the broadest exposure to our residents, faculty and residency program. Due to high demand for our limited number of positions, we are generally not able to offer a full 4 weeks in a single department. The experience can usually be catered to the needs of the student, will include both inpatient and outpatient exposure and, except for the Inpatient Medicine service, does not entail working weekends. Regardless of rotation, all externs also see patients in our continuity clinic with our residents and faculty .
We limit the number of students on each rotation to optimize learning, so we ask that you rank your rotation preferences from the different specialties offered. Options include:
- Inpatient Medicine
- Intensive Care Unit
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Emergency Department (not available July - August)
As demand for our clerkships has risen, we give priority to those applicants with an interest in broad-spectrum Family Medicine. Every application is reviewed in its entirety, but please excuse us if you do not hear back immediately. We have a limited number of externships, and occasionally need to hold applications for a time in order to compare them against a group of peers.
