James Ahern, MD

Hello, my name is Jim Ahern. I was born in Charleston, SC and raised in Ridgefield, CT by a family doctor father and English professor mother. In high school I enjoyed playing music, especially guitar in the jazz bands at school and rock bands with my friends. I also developed a love for the outdoors through many camping and hiking trips, including a 23-day trek through Southwest Utah.

I did my undergraduate studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where I majored in English with an emphasis on creative writing. Initially I thought I would pursue publishing, but after graduation I found myself working in business. I had eight successful years working as an account manager in the tech industry, but ultimately felt something missing. So I sold my house, truck, and most of my possessions and moved to the beaches of Costa Rica with my two dogs, Sasha and Lita. We enjoyed surfing, running on the beach, reading, and cooking, as well as volunteering with local groups supporting orphans. When the time came to move back to the US, I knew my work needed to be much more personally meaningful, and more service-oriented. Finally finding my voice and my passion in medicine, I enrolled in a post-baccalaureate pre-medical program at the University of Colorado, then moved back to Connecticut for medical school where I attended the Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University. I became sold on Family Medicine early on, with its longitudinal patient relationships, wide scope of practice, and many service opportunities abroad.

I am thrilled to come to VCMC with Sasha, Lita, and my girlfriend Steph, where we hope to put down roots. Personally, we are looking forward to exploring all Ventura has to offer in terms of great beaches, beautiful mountains, and wonderful people. Professionally, I look forward to building long-term relationships with my patients while practicing full-spectrum medicine. I am also interested in international medicine and would ultimately like to help start a Family Medicine residency overseas.
