Claire Swogger, MD

University of Iowa
I was born and raised in northwest Arkansas in a small town, Eureka Springs, where I had pretty much an ideal childhood. I spent most of my time either with family and friends on the lake, at gymnastics practice or getting into trouble with my two sisters. When it was time to go to college, I moved up to Lincoln, Nebraska where I spent four wonderful years getting my degree in Nutrition Science and cheering on the Huskers. I pretty much always knew I wanted to work in medicine and during undergrad I decided to go to medical school so I traveled just a few short hours east to attend medical school at the University of Iowa. During my time at Iowa, I discovered my love for primary care and full-spectrum family medicine and knew I wanted to go to a program where I would have the training to work anywhere and do anything.
Ventura is the perfect place for me to pursue these passions - it has everything I wanted in a program and I felt right at home from day one. I don't know where I'll end up after residency, but I know that when I'm done I'll have the training to work anywhere from third world countries, to a rural medicine clinic where I'm the only doctor for 100 miles, to an urban clinic working with the underserved. I am convinced beyond a doubt that the training I receive here will equip me to work as a full-spectrum family med doc where ever I find myself. And I cannot say enough about the people I work with and how fantastic they are. It is an incredibly supportive environment that already feels like family even after being here only a few short months. I can't imagine a better place for me to train in family medicine.
When I'm not learning all there is to know about family medicine, I like to be outside and am loving living here and exploring my new town. I like to spend time with friends and family (I'm convincing them all to visit me at the beach!), hanging out with my black lab/English pointer Charlie, and, like any other good Midwestern girl, I love college football - Go Big Red! Finally, my favorite foods are pickles and jelly. But not together.
